The San Juan Islands have always been known for their amazing wildlife sightings. From the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the lower 48 to the world famous Orcas pods that call the water surrounding the islands home, there is always something or someone exciting to see if you keep your eyes peeled.
Some of the best wildlife sightings can be had right outside your glamping tent in Moran State Park on Orcas Island! The beautiful lakes, waterfalls and forests that comprise the park are home for many of the island’s four legged and winged friends.
Black tailed deer can be seen on virtually any nature hike or by simply opening your tent flaps in the morning at Moran State Park. You may even find them peacefully grazing in the woodlands around your glamping site. Make sure not to feed them but instead take a deep breath and relax while enjoying your woodland companion. Oh and be sure to keep your eyes out for Orcas’ famous spotted deer!
Glamping in Moran State Park can be a birder’s dream vacation. You may see a bald eagle soaring above or a great blue heron sitting silently along the lake shore waiting for his dinner. Towards dusk, make sure to turn your eyes towards the tree tops to see if you can find a barred owl coming out for the evening!
Remember to always respect the wildlife’s habitat and space as you enjoy the many outdoor activities Orcas Island has to offer and, stated simply, if you encounter any wildlife – back off! That also goes for more common critters like raccoons. Raccoons are not welcome glamping guests so please help us keep them away from your glamping site by following three easy steps:
Don’t feed raccoons
Don’t give raccoons access to refuse
Clean up any barbeque, food prep or cooking areas!
