Are you new to the concept of glamping on an island? Great:  the Adventure Ambassadors have compiled a handy list of need to know basics about glamping in Moran State Park on Orcas Island to help guide you to one of the best summer adventures yet!  Don’t forget to also have a look at our FAQ page here.

Getting Here

If you’re bringing a car to Orcas Island – book your boat! Moran State Park is located about 14 miles from where the Washington State Ferries dock on Orcas Island. This means having a car while visiting us will be really helpful. You’ll catch the boat in Anacortes Washington (about 2 hours north of Seattle) and arrive on Orcas Island about an hour later.

Again, you’ll need to make a reservation for your vehicle to get on the ferry to make sure you can get to the island. Once on board, sit back and enjoy a ride that’s been hailed the 3rd most beautiful ferry ride in the world!

Shopping List

Eastsound is the main “village” on Orcas Island and it is located about 7 miles from Camp. You can gear up for your campfire cook outs at the Island Market grocery store open from 8am-9pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-8pm on Sunday. The Orcas Food Co-Op is a great place to pick up locally grown produce and organic items from 8am-8pm, Monday- Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sunday.

You’ll also find a drug store, a sporting goods store as well as a variety of great shops and restaurants all in Eastsound! Please bear mind lots of shops keep shopkeepers hours with a majority being open about 10am to 5pm or 6pm daily.

Speaking of food – don’t forget ICE!  You won’t have a refrigerator in you glamping tent but we do provide a cooler so bring some ice and plan your meals and buying around what you need to keep everything fresh and at the right temperature.

Gearing Up

Though our glamping tents are really nice and offer a cushier experience than traditional camping, you’re still outdoors and you’re still camping! The first rule of a good camping trip is to be prepared. Be prepared by bringing everything you think that you might need – especially when it comes to clothing.

While the weather is generally pretty nice in the San Juans, nights still get chilly so go ahead and pack that jacket you’re not sure about. Since you’ll be living and playing outside, bring at least one ‘extra’ of everything when planning out your clothing. You’ll be glad for that extra pair of socks, shoes, jeans and sweatshirt if things get wet or dirty.

Going out whale watching? Dress and pack for the water – not the weather! While the forecast could be for sunny skies and warm temps, the water isn’t going to be warm so plan your clothing for the 55 degree water, not the 75 degree weather. Oh, and don’t forget sunblock!

What’s there to do?

As little or as much as you’d like.

Fist, unplug. Your cell phone probably won’t work at camp and there’s no electricity to our glamping tents so you’ll have a good excuse to enjoy a digital detox.

Next, go play! There are miles and miles of hiking in Moran State Park and five freshwater lakes so you could fill up a few days boating, swimming and hiking without even leaving the Park!

If you’d rather cast a line – be sure to get a license!

If you’re looking to branch out, there are lots of options for sea kayaking, whale watching, shopping, art galleries and more.
