2023 Season Experience Update: B.Y.O.B.  (bring your own bedding and bath supplies)

We setup cedar platforms with canvas tents on walk-in Moran State Park campsites.

You take it from there.

Here’s the second hike in our series of long Moran State Park hikes. The Moran State Park hike, Mount Pickett Loop, clocks-in at right around 6 miles and offers a good climb, wide trails, and usually a bit less traffic. While there are lots of options for shorter hikes to popular natural features, sometimes it’s nice to take the path less traveled and enjoy a beautiful forest.

Keep reading for a few tips on this trail.  As always, be sure to bring a map, compass, and plenty of provisions so that you’re prepared for your adventure in the wilderness!

Mount Pickett Loop

approximately 6 miles

Head up Mount Constitution Road to the Mountain Lake Trailhead. You’ll start this hike at the first trailhead, across from the log cabin. At the intersection at the end of the bridge, head to your left past the Mountain Lake Dam. Within a few hundred feet you’ll come to another intersection, where you’ll take the service road to your right, towards Mount Pickett. Wind your way up the road until you come to the junction with the Mount Pickett trailhead on your left.

You won’t find large open vistas in this trail; however, it will take you through the majesty of the largest old growth forest in this area. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this lesser used trail as you take in the sights and sounds of the deep forest. As you make your way, follow the signs towards Twin Lakes and then back to Mountain Lake. Once at Mountain Lake, you can choose to extend your hike by turning left and heading around the far side of the lake. Alternatively, you can stay right along the near side of the lake. Both will take you straight back to your car.
