June is Orca Awareness Month, and events all over the Northwest are raising awareness of these incredible creatures!
About the San Juan Islands’ Southern Resident Orca
Southern Residents have been listed as critically endangered since 2005, and their small population continues to dwindle. Lack of Chinook salmon, their main food source, along with pollutants in the water and vessel noise, are pushing these amazing animals to the brink of extinction. However, the Orca Salmon Alliance and their partners are raising awareness. They’re calling everyone to action to help solve the plight of the orcas of the Salish Sea.
Orca Awareness Month is all about taking action to help our beautiful Southern Resident orcas survive. The Orca Salmon Alliance has lots of great ideas on how you can help. You could take public transportation for the month of June, or join a beach clean up! Check out their website for a full list of suggestions and events to help you be a steward of orca habitat.
Orcas Awareness Month Event on San Juan Island
Orca Sing 2019 will take place at Lime Kiln State Park on San Juan Island, June 22 at 7pm. Singers and musicians from all over the region join together to welcome and celebrate these magnificent animals through song. It’s an amazing event!
Lime Kiln State Park is on San Juan Island, so it’s ferry boat ride and a drive from Orcas Island. If you’d like to visit Lime Kiln a different time to see if you’re lucky enough to catch those big black fins swimming by, they’re open daily. Bonus: they often know where the orcas were last spotted!
Land Based Whale Viewing on Orcas Island
There are a few options for you to view orcas swimming by from Orcas Island. You could try North Beach, just a short drive from our fully-outfitted canvas wall tents in the heart of Moran State Park. The orcas have been spotted from this lovely beach from time to time. Bonus: it’s a great spot to catch the sunset!
