You take it from there.
We want to make sure that you have everything you need to create the perfect camp meals for your friends and family without having to leave your Orcas Island Glamping site, so have a look at the kits that we offer and add them to your visit for effortless meal-making!
We get it: cooking on an open fire can be intimidating. Fear not – you’ll be able to handle it. As you can imagine, it’s critical to build an adequate fire in order to get some serious cooking done. We’ve put together a little video that features our favorite fire building strategy perfect for cooking.
The key to a good cooking fire is time. The best cooking condition is actually over hot coals, not over direct flames. Remember to be patient and to wait at least 30 minutes to allow the hot coals and embers to form. While you can place cast iron pots and pans directly on the hot embers, our fire rings are all equipped with folding grills for your convenience. If you’re using one of our camp stoves, then it should be smooth sailing. Just remember to close the valves and unhook the propane when you’re through!
At last comes the burning (pun intended) question; what’s for dinner? Orcas Island offers a wide variety of fresh, island-grown and raised vegetables and meats so we encourage glampers to get to know the locally produced food and get creative in the (camp) kitchen. Cast iron pots and skillets are amazing for making anything from stir fry to brownies.
For breakfast: Consider a sweet potato, egg and veggie skillet. Toss in some grated sweet potato, some chopped veggies and onion, and scramble in some eggs. Top with a sharp cheddar cheese and cover until it melts for a delicious and satisfying breakfast.
For lunch: create a custom grilled cheese sandwich. These are sure to please any glamper!
For dinner: Foil is your best friend. You could throw almost any meat and veggie duo together into a tinfoil pocket and throw it in the cast iron to make a delicious dinner after a day of enjoying and exploring the island.
For the finale: wow your family with some delicious cast iron cobbler. You can use almost any fresh fruit (peach is our favorite) and simply cover in a traditional cobbler crumble top before baking. Ice cream might not be a possibility out at camp but don’t worry, you can store whipped cream in the cooler just fine!
We hope this little excerpt helps get your creative cooking juices going. We look forward to welcoming you to the island and can’t wait to hear about your culinary creations at camp. Go ahead and book your glamping site and then get that grocery list going!
