You take it from there.
Located in the San Juan Archipelago off the coast of Washington State, historic Orcas Island offers both beauty and rich history. The Island’s abundant natural resources and emerald peaks draw visitors today much like they drew settlers historically.
Planning an island getaway? Add some history to your escape and check out these historic Orcas Island locations!
Orcas Island Historical Museum
Moved to the Village of Eastsound back in the mid-20th century, six donated pioneer cabins make up this historical gem. Thousands of artifacts, photos, and documents tell the story of Orcas Island. The Museum is the perfect spot to understand and appreciate what life was like way back then.
Be sure to plan your visit to the museum 11am-4pm Wednesday through Saturday.
Crow Valley School
Built in 1888, this one room school house is nestled off Crow Valley Road amazingly in its original location. It was the community’s school for thirty years before ultimately transitioning to a gathering space for islanders. Additionally, it’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It’s important to note that the Crow Valley School Museum is only open to the public Friday and Saturday, 12pm-4pm, from May 25-September 1.
Mount Constitution Observation Tower
Distinguished Seattle architect, Ellsworth Storey, designed this iconic tower. Perched atop the highest mountain in the San Juan Islands, Ellsworth designed the tower to look like a 12th century stronghold. It’s not only a piece of Island history, but also a piece of U.S. history. The famous Civilian Conservation Corps built the tower beginning in 1935. You can reach this Orcas Island icon by car when the road up Mount Constitution is open.
If you’re up for a challenge, you can also hike Mount Constitution from dawn to dusk everyday.
