2023 Season Experience Update: B.Y.O.B.  (bring your own bedding and bath supplies)

We setup cedar platforms with canvas tents on walk-in Moran State Park campsites.

You take it from there.

It’s warming-up on Orcas Island so we’re excited to hit the trail and explore all of the wonders that our beautiful isle offers. If you’re looking to conquer mountains this spring or summer, the Mount Constitution hike in Moran State Park is a great choice. At 2,389 feet it’s the perfect climb to get your heart pumping without worrying about snow in the early spring or summer.

Know before you go:  there’s more than one way to scale the highest point in the San Juans. We’ll let you in on our three favorite trails for the Mount Constitution hike in Moran State Park to get you to the summit and breathtaking views!

LEANTO Washington State Glamping Cascade Falls

The Scenic Route

Starting from the very bottom of the mountain at Cascade Lake, this approximately 15 mile hike ensures that you see all of Moran State Park’s major attractions. Cross the road at the day use beach, and wander up the trail toward Cascade Falls. The Falls will be your first jaw-dropping sight as you climb your way to the tippity top. You’ll follow signs to Mountain Lake, Little Summit and finally The Tower. Make sure to stop off at Little Summit for incredible views overlooking all of the San Juans and the Olympic Mountains.

The Mount Constitution Loop

LEANTO Mountain Lake Island

This slightly abbreviated loop starts at Mountain Lake, and takes about 6.7 miles to complete. From the first parking area, near the Mountain Lake group site, head up the hill behind the picnic shelter. Keep in mind that this is the steepest part of the whole journey, so be prepared to get your heart pumping right out of the gate!

The loop winds through the beautiful log pine forests of Moran State Park and showcases all the best views of Mount Baker, Bellingham and the eastern half of the San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands. Once you’ve basked in the glory of the top of the mountain, head down towards the parking area.  Locate the trail heading towards Twin Lakes at the bottom of the hill from the Tower. Follow this trail back to Mountain Lake, completing the loop.

LEANTO Little Summit View Moran State Park

The Short Cut

If you’re looking for all the great views but less miles and smaller hills, we’ve got the hike for you! Start your journey from Little Summit for a there and back again hike of about 4.4 miles.

You’ll still be climbing uphill but the elevation gain will be much less, while still offering you the same incredible views towards the top of the mountain. Take time to stop at the Little Summit view point, maybe even pack a pre-hike lunch and dine at the Little Summit picnic tables. Arguably the best seats for a meal on Orcas Island!

This hike is short and to lots of great photo opportunities: overlooking the glassy waters of Mountain Lake and the Salish Sea.

Once you’ve conquered all of the mountains that you can handle, relax with us right in the heart of Moran State Park. Our fully furnished canvas wall tents are the perfect spot for you to kick back, and enjoy a peaceful evening by the campfire after a hard day’s climb.
